What does it take to learn to fly?

Canadian Flight Training Requirements
For the Canadian Ultralight Pilot Permit

Many people wonder if they have what it takes to learn to fly and the simple answer is “yes.”   A degree of expertise is required, but we find that basically anyone who can drive an automobile and find their way home from the Mall is a good candidate.  Desire plays a big part and during the past 15 years of operating a flying school we have only had to wash out 3 students, after their first couple of lessons.  The ability or inability shows up quickly and we are careful to place our priorities correctly and give students honest and thoughtful evaluations.

We have taught students as young as 12 and 13 years old (could not solo until 14) and as old as 72.  Many have learned after retirement and found that as a result of acquiring a new skill that their life took on a whole new meaning.  The majority of our students are in the 23 to 45 year range.  After training and soloing hundreds of pilots we have developed techniques that help new pilots develop flying skills early on and minimize the length of their training time.   Students learning in the EZ Flyer are usually ready for solo within 4 to 8 hours of dual flight time, although there is never a problem in taking longer, because the decision to go solo is a mutual one between the instructor and student.
